Switching Salons Without the Awkwardness: A Guide for the Guilty
Let’s name the thing nobody says out loud: plenty of people stay with a salon long after it stopped working for them, because leaving feels like a breakup. You’ve sat in that chair for years. They know about your sister’s wedding. And so you keep booking, slightly disappointed, out of sheer politeness.
Here’s your permission slip: it’s okay to switch salons. Stylists know this better than anyone — hair is personal, life changes, people move, needs evolve. A professional wants you in a chair that’s right for you, even when it isn’t theirs. You don’t owe anyone an explanation, a farewell tour, or an apology. You’re allowed to just… go.
What to bring to a first appointment
A new salon works best when it isn’t guessing, so bring evidence:
- Photos of your hair lately — good days and bad days both. The bad days are often more useful.
- Your color history, as well as you know it. When it was last colored, roughly what was done, and — no judgment, truly — any box dye. We only ask because lightener finds old color like a flashlight finds dust; knowing beforehand is the difference between a plan and a surprise.
- Inspiration photos, even imperfect ones. “Her color, but less gold” tells a colorist plenty.
- Your honest routine. If you air-dry and wash twice a week, say so. The right cut and color are the ones that work on your Tuesday, not in a salon mirror.
What a good first consultation looks like
You should be listened to before you’re advised — about your hair’s history, your routine, and what you actually want, not what’s fashionable. A good consultation includes honest limits (“that blonde is two sessions, not one”), a clear plan, and pricing confirmed before anything is mixed — we’ve written about how color is actually priced if you want the specifics. What it should never include: guilt about your previous salon, sneering at old color work, or pressure to book more than you came for. If you feel judged in a consultation, that’s the only sign you need.
At Canterbury & Co., the consultation isn’t a formality we rush past — it’s the first service. Unhurried, no judgment, every chair trained the same way.
When you’re ready
