On Monday, November 2, the Canterbury & Co. stylist team will be in Miami for
Depth and Tone: Deep Dive, a color class at the Wella Creative
Academy Miami, part of
Wella Education’s Creative Academies,
held at Atma Beauty in Miami Beach. It is taught by Wella Signature Artist
Carrera Alvarez and Design Team artist Crystal Perez.
What the Creative Academy is
Wella Education runs its Creative Academies in six cities: Atlanta,
Miami, Montclair, Chicago, Washington DC and Austin. They are classes for
working stylists, each hosted by a Wella partner salon, and Atma Beauty is
the Miami host.
Why we go
Wella Professionals is our color partner: the Canterbury Color Team
specializes in its color, and a day like this keeps that partnership
working in both directions. The stylist team brings new technique and formulation
thinking home to share with the rest of the Color Team, and Wella’s artists
meet the stylists who use their color in Fort Myers every day.
It is also a good room to be in. A Creative Academy puts working stylists
from other salons alongside Wella’s own educators, so the day is as much
conversation as demonstration: how other salons approach formulation, what
clients are asking for this season, and what is working behind other
chairs. It is a chance for the stylist team to represent Canterbury & Co. among
people who care about color as much as we do, and we are proud to have
them there.
What Depth and Tone covers
This one is about color deposit, the side of hair color that adds pigment
rather than lightening. Wella builds the class around creating “the perfect
winter hue”, and its class page names three things stylists come away
with: formulation, placement and color layering.
In plain terms, that means choosing a formula for the depth and tone you
want, deciding where each shade goes, and layering neutral, warm and cool
tones so the finished color looks rich and balanced, with light moving
through it, rather than one flat block. The class also covers the care
products that help a layered color keep its tone, shine and softness once
you have left the salon.
Why it matters for your color
Depth and tone are much of what makes a color look rich rather than flat.
A brunette built from several related tones moves and catches light in a
way a single shade does not. And tone is often the first thing to drift as
a color fades, so how it is built on the day has a lot to do with how long
it keeps looking the way it did when you left.
The Canterbury Color Team specializes in Wella Professionals color, so a
Wella class like this one speaks directly to the work the Color Team does
every day. Education runs through color at Canterbury & Co. Our founder,
Alli Canterbury, spent years as a Wella
Professionals color educator, traveling the US to train other stylists. Learning from other artists,
and bringing it back to the whole team, is part of the same habit.
What this means for you
- If you have been thinking about a richer shade for winter, bring the
idea to your next color consultation. Photos help, and so does your
color history, including anything done at home.
- Ask about tone, not only shade. It is a fair question to ask how
your color should look a few weeks from now, and what will help keep it
there. A gloss is deposit-only color too, and our
guide to hair gloss treatments
explains where it fits between appointments.
- Start with a consultation. In online booking, choose Consultation,
then Color Consultation. Our services page sets out our
color services.
The day before, at our salon
Two days, two classes. On Sunday, November 1, the day before Miami,
we host Hattori Hanzo Shears’ haircutting class with Wayne Tuggle at the
salon in Fort Myers. It is a class for hair professionals, and the details
and registration link are in our
post about the class.
Hair professionals who would like to see Depth and Tone for themselves
will find it on
Wella Education’s Creative Academies page.
And if you are a stylist who wants education like this built into your
work, our careers page is the place to start.
Details of the class come from Wella Education’s Creative Academies page,
its Miami calendar and class listings on wellaed.com, and the event flyer
Wella sent the salon. The quoted phrase is Wella’s own.
